I love Niroot Puttapipat's work at the best of times, so for him to have done paper engineering is amazing. I love his intricate paper-cuts and pop-ups. The more colourful image is from a book of Aladdin where each scene has 3 layers to it; From what I can see the front layer is silhouettes, the middle layer has dashes of colour and the background layer is the most colourful. Using plain white paper is also incredibly effective with such intricate work.
